In the Details: a review of Ylli Haruni's painting

Whether you’re from the suburbs of Southern Ontario or the bustling streets of Toronto, most Canadians will immediately resonate with Ylli Haruni’s Mississauga Painting.

In Haruni’s stunning painting of Mississauga, she depicts the beauty of bustling Candian streets. From the tall buildings, many cars and most notably, the plaza sign in the corner, signalling the sign a gas station or coffee joint nearby.

Her brushstrokes are incredibly detailed and powerful; layers of valued and well-places colours, impactful lighting and grounding imagery. With masterful talent, Haruni brings to light a seemingly ordinary street and perhaps most ordinary of all is the way she does it. It isn’t by any magical means. Haruni uses familiar details to paint a picture we’re all accustomed to. The cars and streetlights and that one blue building that seems to pop up everywhere. Those little details paint the picture, very literally, of Candian streets we live in and love.

When I first start the painting, I immediately resonated with it. I spotted all the familiar details, accompanied by the lighting that bought the scene to life, it felt like I was really there. With the combination of these familiar and stunning details, Haruni made an ordinary street into something extraordinary. Now, the only thing that was missing was the Tim Hortons logo on the side.
